Mondays are Motivation Day

If you watch a baby learning to walk it can seem very painful. The baby will wobble and take one small step just to fall right down. After fighting to stand back up the same one step will be taken and again, boom down to the ground. Soon that one step will turn into two steps. Then the steps become more sure and focused…three…four…five.

Starting out on a weight loss or exercise plan can be just a scary and just as much hard work for you as learning to walk is for that baby. You need to learn to let go of the old supports and create your own support, standing on your own two feet if you will. Then come those hair raising first few steps.

When you begin you may not know a dumbell from a cowbell or a crunch from a squat, but bit by bit you will learn and before you know it you’ll be able to put it together just like the baby taking the second and third steps and finally running.

I know our society expects immediate results and immediate gratification, but life just isn’t like that. It can take time to learn the things you need to be successful, but that learning is part of the path. And all of the things you learn right from the very beginning help to keep you successful when you encounter later problems. Like a baby who now needs to climb stairs or wants to run from the family dog you can do it because you’ve learned the simple tasks like walking.

While it helps to have a long term goal in mind you are often better served on a daily basis by focusing on the little things. All the small goals that will add up to that long term goal. It’s tough to stick to a big commitment. Make it easier by starting small and getting some instant success everyday. The following are a list of small goals you can try to achieve everyday.

  • Drink 8 glasses of water
  • Eat two servings of fruit
  • Eat two servings of vegetables
  • Take a walk for at least 20 minutes
  • Find a motivating picture and hang it where you will see it
  • Find a friend to share your weight loss or exercise goals with
  • Keep positive thoughts in your mind
  • Write down what you eat for the day
  • Avoid sodas and fruit juices

All of these are really simple things to do, btu string them together and you’ll be well on your way. Remember it’s all of the small things that will add up to your big successes!
